Bask in the warmth of a Summer in San Sebastian by Yoon Hyup.

In 2016, Brooklyn-based artist Yoon Hyup was living in a modest apartment with very little light. Caught in the grasp of fast-paced city life, he found himself yearning for sunlight and nature. So when he was invited to the Spanish city of San Sebastián for the summer, his art practice soon began to reflect his new environment.

Summer in San Sebastian is a painting of the city view from his window, depicted in his signature melody of lines and dots. Over time, this work has become a personal reminder to the artist to slow down, reflect and appreciate the moment.

For this limited edition print, the painting was carefully replicated by our master printers in close collaboration with Yoon, with each colour grade precisely matched to the original painting. The sea, beach and sky are smooth and flat, while the city elements are raised to create a contrasting sculpted effect.

I remember it was a view from a hillside overlooking the entire city, where the red rooftops flowed through the city like a pattern. There was something about the summer vibe that brought a sense of ease I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Yoon Hyup5 collaborationsYoon Hyup translates the world around him into a medley of lines and dots. They’re painted in a variety of scenes, from raindrops on a window to entire cityscapes of New York. Working with acrylic on canvas, he creates flat orbs of colour that resemble light flares. The rhythmic quality of these marks reflects music's influence on his work. Sounds guide his compositions – he compares painting to jazz improvisation. He also uses colour to, quite literally, create harmony. Each is carefully selected to represent a different note, so that together they build a chord.
